Web UI for DTG 3000

Posted on | October 9, 2009 | No Comments

I was originally hired at Dilithium Networks to create a Command Line Interface reference guide for their DTG 3000 Multimedia Gateway product. When I write reference guides, I have a formula for good documentation. A description of each and every parameter a user can change. What is the purpose of the parameter? What are the values of that parameter? If you enter one value, how does that affect other parts of the system?

Regardless, because I am so systematic, I learn about all parts of a system. I learn how pieces fit together. I learn how to make it work.

One day after my writing contract for the DTG 3000 Command Line Reference Guide had ended, Nassir Samantar (the VP of Engineering) contacted me and asked if I could help his platform team design a web-based user interface for the DTG.  He needed someone who understood the system and what was required to make it work.

I had seven weeks to complete the project. I set up a plan and schedule based on the components of the system. Nassir set up a project tracking spreadsheet.

In the first two weeks, I produced a user information model in Microsoft Visio. I analyzed all the system parameters and grouped them together into task-oriented menus. I worked with the primary system design engineer to identify dependencies between parameters and parameter values in the system. We drew them into the user information model.

I then took that information model and produced a series 65 wireframes for the development team to use for the design.
